I think it fits with theme, tone and character development of the book. Mrs. Biswell quickly proves to be a bad egg who does not even like children. She brands Zinkoff's handwriting as "atrocious," and then completely loses control when she finds him writing on the greenboard. Mrs. Biswell symbolizes the arbitrary power of adults to shape the lives of children. Her appearance in Zinkoff's life is pure bad luck, but the larger question remains: is Zinkoff, with his strange ways, equipped to withstand the bad influence of people like Mrs. Biswell?
