The officer's reference to the novel Coral Island, somewhat parallels the boys time on the island before the rescuers arrived. In the novel, the boys are shipwrecked, indulging in play and adventure. Unlike Ralph and the others, the boys in the novel act like gentlemen and never lose their sense of civility.
