Evidence of barbarism can be found in the boys painting their faces, the older boys picking on and frightening the younger boys, and begin to fight amongst themselves (physical fights).
The fact that rules still influence the boys lives can be found in Maurice's remorse over getting sand in Percival's eye, Roger's decision to frighten Henry with the rock rather than hurt him, and Jack's eventual apology for allowing the fire to go out.
