Letter From Birmingham Jail
What is King’s initial reaction to being labeled as an extremist?
H
H
King was responding directly to fact that that he'd been labeled an extremist by “white moderates”, as well as the Christian leadership of local churches. He did not, however, argue against the label of extremist, but rather, embraced it and justified it through a well thought out argument, an argument that both validated positive instances of extremism and equated the passivity of white moderates to a form of extremism in itself. The inaction of the white moderates created a form of severe injustice. King saw extremism as a dynamic tool that he could be used to convey his message and advocate for the eradication of segregation.
