King's critics suggested that he should not protest in Birmingham because it was not his home.

King explained that Birmingham was one of the most racially segregated and oppressive, to blacks, city in America. The protests began to pressure business leaders to cease discrimination for employment and end segregation in public facilities, restaurants, schools, and stores.
