The primary theme in the novel is slavery. Throughout the text, readers follow the life of Annis from a young age until she becomes elderly, working in different plantations spanning from Southern Carolina to Louisiana. Her father sells Annis into slavery when she is ten years old. Annis is sold from one slave owner to the other, and she experiences physical pain and mental breakdowns. Through Annis' story, readers learn that enslaved people are inhumanely treated by their masters.

Throughout the period Annis works as an enslaved person, she goes through hell because she is sold from one brutal slave owner to the other. Annis often questions her purpose on earth because she believes she was not born to suffer. Anni’s spirituality connects her to her history and myth, which reduces her physical pain.
