Uncle Hammer is referring to the danger Bud put himself in by marrying a white woman. During the time period in question, black men could be lynched for smiling at a white woman...... marrying a white woman was taking a great chance. In Uncle Hammer's opinion..... Bud was being foolish.... foolish with his life.
