Was the story's ending unexpected, or were you prepared for it? What elements of the story foreshadowed the ending?

I think the story was meant to have this morbid but humorous twist. I first read this so many years ago but I recall being delighted because it wasn't what I expected. Marriages, especially back then, were meant to follow a narrowly "happy" script. As for foreshadowing, at one point she feels something approaching her that she wants to fight. That could mean her death that happens at the end.
