The use of this reference is meant to help the reader understand the exultation Mrs Mallard feels now that she's free. The news of her husband's death, the lack of emotion in their relationship, and her place as a wife had all melted away..... she was no longer just a wife. She could be whatever she wished, something that gave her an air of victory.
