We liked the house because, apart from its being old and
spacious (in a day when old houses go down for a profitable
auction of their construction materials), it kept the memories of greatgrandparents,
our paternal grandfather, our parents and the whole of
childhood.

From the text, we can infer that the sibling's home was far more important to them for what it represented, than the amount of money it could have afforded them.
