why was johnny happy that cilla and isannah were insulting him again

"He was happy because once more they were insulting him. They were not pitying or being afraid of him because he had an accident." (Page 80)

From this quote Johnny was over joyed by their insults because it meant that things were getting back to normal, that people weren't treating him differently just because he'd been hurt.
