What is Doves relationship with Johnny in chapters 6-8?

Johnny bullies Dove early in the novel. As Johnny matures he begins to see Dove in a new light and protects Dove from some of his harsh realities. He still takes advantage of Dove's naiveté but not in an abusive way.
