Krakauer was hired by the magazine Outside to cover Dick Bass' climb. Bored with sitting around at the camp, he began to train. Then, the magazine decided to subsidize the climb. Thus..... he climbed.
Into Thin Air
Though Krakauer did not agree with what the climb had become, he did see it as a once in a lifetime journaling opportunity and decided to take it. He had wanted to criticize the over-commercialized climbing that everyone was doing and felt that it was his job to make an accurate retelling of what actually happens on the mountain. He didn’t want to promote the mountain or get other people to climb it, he just wanted to inform others.
