When the climbers reach Camp 2, Krakauer spots two frozen corpses along the trail, and one of the Sherpas comes down with High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE).
The teams ascent to Camp 3 is aborted during its first attempt because of frigid temperatures. They succeed in their second attempt the nect day.
The climbers face a windstorm at Camp 4.
Descending the mountain is worse than the climb because of storm conditions.
