You really have to read the chapter to appreciate the detail you want. In 1921, the Tibetan government opened its borders to foreigners. There were two previous British expeditions that failed. In 1924, on the third British expedition, Edward Norton reached an elevation just 900 feet below the summit. It was not until May 29th1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
