Who is gallien? How did gallien meet McCandless respond

Jim Gallen is a union electrician and accomplished hunter and woodsman who picks up Alex four miles outside of Fairbanks and drives him to Denali. He is the last person to see McCandless alive. Jim is shocked that Alex is going into the Alaskan wilds so unprepared. He tries to give Alex some gear and his boots.
