I think a major theme that is interesting is the whole creation/evolution debate. The idea that a teacher can be jailed for teaching the theory of evolution to his students seems preposterous. The 1950's is not ancient history. The ideology and religious zeal of the American South reminds me that extreme religious fundamentalism, be it Christian, Islamic or any other theology, is poison. Yet beyond the religious dogma versus scientific evidence there are interesting social issues as well. Urban and rural ideology seems almost religions in themselves. The conservative rural Bible believing citizen scratches and claws for a nostalgic identity that is largely an illusion. The urban dweller looks on with disdain confident that their secular science has all the answers. Even though Cates is vindicated at the end, there only seems more of an empty space between the rural religious and the urban secularist.
