Who wrote "Inherit the Wind"? What was the inspiration for writing the book?

Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, co-wrote Inherit the Wind, based upon the trial of John Scopes. Scopes was put on trial in the state of Tennessee for teaching evolution in its schools.
