Indian Horse

Is Indian Horse based on the experiences of Richard Wagamese?

I am writing an essay and I wanted to know if the book, Indian Horse, is based on the real-life experiences of the author Richard Wagamese. Saul seems to have a lot of similarities with the author, such as when he was little, but it also seems to be some vast differences between the two. I wanted to find proof that Wagamese wrote the novel according to him, but I can't seem to find any.

No, the book was not based on his direct personal experience. Richard Wagamese played hockey until he was 39 years old. Some of Saul's experiences like fitting into large skates and improvising hockey pucks were things that Richard Wagamese did himself as a child. The specific narrative was fictional though. You can check out a cool CBC interview with him below.
