How were most of the students treated in the school? Why did Saul get away from the same treatment?

Most kids spent most of their days in labour. They were trated like live stocks. Anyone who shirked or complained was beaten in front of everyone. Some were sexually abused. Saul was "protected" by Father Leboutilier so he escaped some of this.
