I think loneliness and looking for companionship are at the heart of this movie. These themes simply relates to the realities of life. How work can bear down on people and the version of it which we hold for ourselves many times does not come true without our effort in seeking it out. Chow and Su's spouses are cheating on them and they find friendship and love with one another, but without the necessary initiative to go after what they want, which is each other, they end up right where they began: lonely.
