The author describes the family's possessions in great detail showing at their possessions are not of significant value. What purpose does this serve in the novel?

Describing the family's possessions serves to illustrate the futitily of the intended robbery. Not only were the Cutters pointlessly and barbarically murdered..... they were murdered for nothing. Their deaths were of no benefit to the thieves.
