What does the title of 'If We Must Die' mean?

The title, If We Must Die, is repreated twice in the poem. The first time, we see the phrase as a fact..... the speaker and his kinsmen have no choices left open to them. The second time, we come to understand that they do, in fact, have a choice..... they have a choice in the way they wil die..... to die noble, honorable deaths.
