Structure:
The play is separated into three acts, each representing a different stage in Kiguunda’s struggle with independence. In Act One, Kiguunda remains proud of his accomplishments and staunch in his resolve to remain independent from the elite. Act Two marks the turning point in his relationship with the elite, as it is when he decides to capitulate to Kioi’s demands for the sake of Gathoni’s future. Finally, in Act Three, Kiguunda resolves to stand up to Kioi in defense of his family and ultimately returns to his prior state of poverty.
