What is the believed cause of the vampire plague that is revealed in this chapter?

The only evidence I find in Chapter Nine regarding the cause of the plague is as follows;

Everyone without exception had to be transported to the fires immediately upon death. It was the only way they knew now to prevent communication. Only flames could destroy the bacteria that caused the plague.
