Why does David not want God to help him save Maria?

Rather than as God to save the little girl, David realizes that the right thing..... the thing that God would want him to do, was save the little girl himself. Saving maria waa something he could do for God.

"He was just going to call on God to help him when a thought occurred to him. God certainly would not want that little girl, so like a flower and so beautiful to look at, to die. Here then was something he could do for God in return."
