I Am David
What does David find out about a woman named Edith Fenegel?
.
.
David sees a photograph of a woman identified as Edith Hjorth Fengel. He says "her eyes look as if - as if she'd known a great deal, and yet she's smiling." Sophie then goes onto tell him that Edith and her husband were politically rebellious, and that they'd been taken prisoner along with their one-year-old son. Edith was told that her husband and child had been executed, and she then escaped to Denmark with the help of a compassionate guard. Sophie then says that goes Edith is as happy "as you can be when you've gone through great unhappiness."
