From the beginning of the novel, Henry wears this "I Am Chinese" button given to him by his father. What was the significance of this button and its message, and how has Henry's understanding of that message changed by the end of the novel?

Over the course of the novel, Henry was looked at “the ridiculous button” his father pinned to his shirt and fought a wave of irritation. The button read “I am Chinese”. It was supposed to protect him from the school bullies or uneducated adults, who might think that he was a Japanese. The irony was in the fact that it didn’t work. The button “I am Chinese” made the school bullies angrier becuase they thought that Henry tried to show that he was better than them, that he was proud not to be American. Pinning on the button “I am Chinese” was like pinning on a button that said “Kick me”.
