Hedda Gabler

What does Hedda want?

Freud's question might be rephrased and asked about Hedda Gabler–what does she want? Ibsen said, in his

notes about the play, "Hedda's fundamental demand is: I want to know everything but keep myself untainted"

(untainted means untouched by disgrace or uncontaminated).

Hedda wants to be entertained. She doesn't love her new husband, and he doesn't excite her. She wants entertainment, passion, and excitement...... meaning another man........ an affair. None-the-less, she needs to keep her actions under wraps because she doesn't want to taint her name. She wants her reputation left unsullied, but she wants a life that would keep the gossips busy if they knew.
