When Brian says he “could not play the game without hope...” What does he mean by this

Brian needed at least a faiint sense of hope to keep going, to continue playing the "game". In Chapter 12 Brian hears the engine of a search plane. He tries to get his signal fire going but the plane doesn't see him and flies away. Brian feels defeated and thinks he needs a bit of hope or he might as well give up.
