Another pivotal theme that permeates across this narrative is that of oppression and social justice. The instability in Nigeria is a result of the legacy of colonial oppression and the British empire has no doubt left its marks on the Nigerian landscape. There is an abundance of characters who surrender to the orientalist narrative that caricatures the east as an uncivilized, inferior space. Characters like Susan echo this belief.

While there is a shade of grey in all characters and ones like Richard are portrayed as benevolent people despite their colonial background, the central idea seems to create a binary between the east and west and delineate how the east, or Nigeria, in this case, has been oppressed by the weight of western influence.
