In Chapter Four, Gardner highlights the zodiac sign of Cancer, which is depicted by a crab. Cancer (the crab) is associated with specific traits, including insecurity, moodiness, tenacity, and sensitivity, and Gardner exposes these same traits in Grendel, namely, his vulnerability, sensitivity, and bashfulness.
