What do you learn about Willie and Tom from the first chapter?

In the first chapter, we learn that Willy is one of the children being evacuated from London because of the war and billeted in the countryside. We learn that Mr. Tom is a long time widower, who has been living alone for a number of years.... sinece his wife died in childbirth.

We also know that Willie is eight years old and super skinny.
