Mrs Beech tells Willie on p. 212 “ I don’t need charity.” What does she mean by this? What does this reveal about her character? What broader issues does this raise for society?

Mrs. Beech has had a hard life and has become a hard person in the process. She views charity suspiciously and feels offended by the thought of it. I think this is a reflection of a major theme in the novel: trauma.
