Bechdel's realtionship with her father changed a great deal, as her coming out led to her mother's revelation that her father was a homosexual. In some ways, the two became closer. Alison comes to understand many things about her father, and her father, in turn, attempts to relate his own experiences to those his daughter now faces. Unfortunately, the two bond..... but not completely, as Alison's father is never able to embrace his sexuality in the same way as his daughter and continues to feel shame for his sexual preferences. In the end, he takes his own life.
