Are don billingsley's attitudes about race in step or out of step with the other residents in the town of Odessa?

I don't think Don wanted to be racist but, when stressed, he reverted to the only viewpoint he was brought up with. After a series of mistakes on the field, Chris Comer replaces Don. Chris happens to be black and Don reverts to racist rants that seem to come so easy to many whites in Odessa.
