He likes the solitude. He feels safe there. It enables him to isolate himself from his troubles.

As Victor climbs the mountains, he is enchanted by their " magnificent and astonishing character". He's lost in natures beauty and a " tingling long-lost sense of pleasure" overcomes him. He is reminded of his boyhood too.
