At the gravesite, what caused Matilda to shove the men? Who agreed with her?

Matilda wanted her grandfather to have a Christian burrial. The gravediggers tell her that a priest will come later and bless all the dead. This is not good enough for Matilda.

My head throbbed to the rhythm of the shovels biting into the earth. My hands decided what to do without consulting the rest of my body.
