Farewell to Manzanar

when woody was drafted into the army he went willingly and against his fathers objections. why did he go?

I need this answer I can't figure it out.

Woody said that he would go because it was his duty. He also thought that the war might possible be over before he got called up.

“I have to go.” “What if you refused to answer the letter.” “It’s my duty.”

“I’m gonna stay. For a while. Until they call me up. They put me in the reserve unit in camp. It could be months. Maybe the war will be over by then.”
