why would an apparently intelligent man such as captain beatty support a society that burns books

What resons would Captain Beatty have to want to have people burn books and no one ever read them

Captain Beatty has been indoctrinated into this society. Somewhere along the line, he lost his soul. He intellectualized and justified the state's ideology. I don't think Captain Beatty believed his justifications.
