Why didn't Montag have a choice about being a fireman?

Montag has never had the awareness to do anything else. Montag became a fireman to follow in the family tradition. His father and grandfather were also firemen. The theme of conformity to expectations can be seen here. I don't think the people in power would even let Montag quit; he simply knows too much.
