what was the single fact that montag could not prove?

Montag couldn't prove Clarisse. He couldn't prove where she'd been, where she'd gone, or her existence. As far as an interpretaton, I'd say that all of Montag's actions have been based around a woman he cannot prove existed. This is why his actions are so completely alien to everyone else around him.
