Everyday Use

Dee and her mother were never close. She never understood her mother, and she always wanted more. She was ashamed of her family, but she wanted to take what she could in regard to the heritage she wanted to distance herself from. It didn't mean Dee's mother didn't love her, only that she didn't understand her.

"But they're priceless!" she was saying now, furiously; for she has a temper.

"Dee (Wangero) looked at me with hatred. "You just will not understand."
