Why was it so hard for Esperanza and her family to survive in the place they immigrated to?

Esperanza, as well as her mother, found themselves in a world they'd never know after escaping to the United States. They had to work... and work hard. There were no luxuries, no servants, and they each had to adjust to caring for themselves after being taken care of for most of their lives.
