Why does the author open the book with a scene of Esperanza and her father lying down to hear the heartbeat of the earth?

Esperanza and her father are very close. As they listen to the land, the two bond with their homeland, the place that provides for them, and upon which they've built their shelter.The scene shows that Esperanza had a place of identity and belonging.
