What happened in the house of Esperanza when she was 5 years old?

When Esperanza was five, bandits came into the house at el Rancho de las Rosas. The bandits intended the family’s silver. Miguel was able to warn Esperanza and Hortensia before the bandits arrived, and they all quickly hid under the bed. When Esperanza accidentally made a noise, Miguel, in a moment of quick thinks, released a field mouse he was hiding in his pocket. He had initially intended to scare Esperanza with the mouse but used it as a distraction instead.
