What did Esperanza mean when she said: "In Mexico we are on opposite banks of the river"?

After Miguel explains to Esperanza that it is time for he and his father to move on.... time for them to embrace different opportunities, Esperanza reminds him how much they're needed. Miguel's response notes that for as long as they remain in Mexico, they will be separated by class divisions and without opportunity.
