Mama explains that Hortensia and Alfonso have taken great trouble to help them in their time of need.

Alfonso was Papa’s close friend and boss of the field-workers at el Rancho de las Rosas. He is also Hortensia’s husband, Jose's brother, and Miguel's father. He makes the arrangements for his family, Esperanza, and Mama to travel to California. Both he and his wife Hortensia have gone to great lengths to secure work, shelter, and necessities for Esperanza and mother.
