In Chapter 4 of Las Guayabas, in what form was Carmen rich?

In chapter 4 of Las guayabas esperanza meets Carmen in the train but when she gets off the train she sees an old woman on her knees begging for money to the rich people but they turn their backs to her. And so Carmen goes to the lady and gives her money and in return the lady blesses her.
