Esperanza Rising

Esperanza enjoyed Miguel's company as a playmate. He was a treasured companion, and she often said she wanted to marry him when she was a child. Esperanza'a father treated Miguel like a son. All of this, however, did not remove the social boundaries erected because of the difference in their social stations. Miguel was loved and treasured, but that didn't change the fact he was a servant's son.
